HSV young gun employee and Supercheap endurance driver David Reynolds is back in Australia after competing in the Sepang 12 hour event in Malaysia over the weekend.

Reynolds and co-drivers Marc Cini and Ian Geekie drove a Porsche 996 in the annual event, competing against a range of vehicles (including the odd Aussie V8!) and drivers from across Asia and around the world.

The team – VRD Motorsports – eventually finished in 13th place overall, but third position in the ‘O’ Class, having been as high as second for eight and half hours of the 12 hour event. Clutch problems cruelly hobbled the team around the nine hour mark, after Reynolds had catapulted the team to the top of the field.

Reynolds said the experience was one he will savour for a long time to come.

“Just the effort in concentrating for up to 70 minutes in sweltering humid, heat will hold me in good stead for the upcoming events that I am contracted to the Supercheap team to compete in,” Reynolds said.

“While we would have loved to win the event outright, it was not to be, but I am looking forward to competing in further overseas endurance races, once Sandown and Bathurst are out of the way”.

Heat and humidity took their toll on the young Aussie driver who speculates that he drank at least 20 litres of fluids over the 12 hours of the event.

“We would put on an ice vest to try and keep cool, but it would literally melt after a couple of laps and heat up.”

“The only way to cool down was to sit in front of an air conditioner when I wasn’t driving!”

The eventual winner of the Sepang 12 hour event was a team led by the son of former Malaysia Prime Minister Mohammad Mahathir.
